Best Deck Stains for Pressure-Treated Wood

Staining pressure treated wood has limitations. Some products work better than others.

Wait First

New PT lumber is wet. Stain won’t penetrate or adhere. Wait 3-6 months typically. Water bead test to confirm.

Semi-Transparent Wins

Best choice for PT wood. Shows grain, adds color, doesn’t trap moisture underneath.

Ready Seal is popular. No primer needed. Forgiving application. Multiple colors.

Cabot Australian Timber Oil. Premium option. Expensive but lasts. Penetrates deeply.

Solid Stain Alternative

More like thin paint. Hides grain but provides more color. Peels eventually unlike semi-transparent.

Behr Solid works okay. Not my favorite but accessible. Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck is better.

What To Avoid

Oil-based on newer PT. The treatment resists oil penetration. Water-based adheres better now.

Thick film finishes. Spar urethane, deck paint. Traps moisture, peels, looks terrible in a year.

Application

Clean first always. Brightener helps too. Restores wood tone before staining.

Apply with brush, roller, or pump sprayer. Back-brush to work it in. Avoid puddles.

Maintenance

Reapply every 2-3 years. Annual in harsh climates. Light cleaning, light sanding, fresh coat.

Consistent maintenance is easier than restoration. Don’t let it go too long.
