Tung oil versus linseed oil. Both work, different characteristics.
Tung Oil
From tung tree nuts. Dries harder than linseed. More water resistant. The premium option.
Pure tung takes forever to cure. Like weeks between coats. Modified versions dry faster.
Slight sheen when built up. Not glossy but not flat either. Natural looking.
Linseed Oil
From flax seeds. Cheaper and more common. Raw linseed takes forever. Boiled linseed includes driers.
Yellows more over time. Noticeable on light woods. Less of a problem on walnut or dark species.
Softer film than tung. Scratches easier. Better for items handled frequently since it absorbs impact.
Application
Both work the same way. Flood surface, let soak, wipe excess. Multiple thin coats.
Sand between coats if you want smoother feel. Optional but nice.
Best Uses
Tung oil for counters, cutting boards, anything seeing water. Better protection.
Linseed for tool handles, furniture, indoor items. Adequate and cheaper.
The Truth
Many products called “tung oil” or “linseed oil” are actually varnish mixtures. Read ingredients. Pure oils say “100%” somewhere.
The mixtures aren’t bad. Just different products. Know what you’re buying.
My Choice
Pure tung for fine work. Boiled linseed for everything else. Both in my shop always.
