“Picture Rail Moulding – A Classic Detail”

Picture rail is old school but useful. Lets you hang art without putting holes everywhere.

What It Is

Trim piece running around the room near the ceiling. Usually 12-18 inches below crown. Has a curved top edge.

Hooks hang over the curve. Wire or cord drops down. Picture hangs from that.

Why Bother

No nail holes in walls. Rearrange art whenever you want. Old plaster walls especially benefit – drilling into plaster is miserable.

Victorian and Edwardian houses had these standard. Part of the look.

Installing New

Moulding profiles available at lumber yards. Not Home Depot usually. Specialty millwork places.

Install level, obviously. Nail or screw into studs. Fill holes, paint to match room trim.

Height is debatable. Higher feels more period-correct. Lower is more practical for adjustments.

The Hardware

S-hooks or specialized picture rail hooks. Brass, nickel, bronze finishes available. Match your other hardware.

Wire or decorative cord. Wire hides better. Cord makes a statement.

Weight Limits

Each hook supports maybe 50-75 pounds depending on design. Heavy mirrors need multiple hooks and wires.

Anchoring matters. Into studs only for serious weight. Into plaster alone won’t hold.

Modern Use

Gallery walls become flexible. Swap art seasonally. No spackling every time you change your mind.
