T1-11 siding. The affordable plywood option that’s everywhere on sheds and cabins.
What It Is
Plywood with grooves cut in. Looks like vertical boards. Comes in 4×8 sheets. Installs fast.
Grades vary. Exterior grade has better glue. Interior grade falls apart outside. Check stamps.
Why People Use It
Cheap. Like really cheap compared to real wood siding. Quick installation. One sheet covers lots of wall.
DIY friendly. No special tools beyond circular saw. Nails on, paint or stain, done.
The Downsides
Bottom edge wicks moisture. Swells, delaminates, rots. Common failure point.
Needs regular maintenance. Seal all edges. Repaint every few years. Neglect it and it fails.
Installation Tips
Gap at bottom. Don’t touch ground or concrete. An inch minimum.
Z-flashing where sheets meet. Water follows vertical grooves, needs somewhere to go.
Prime all edges before installation. Back-prime sheets too. Moisture from inside matters.
Best Uses
Sheds, barns, detached garages. Places where economy matters and some maintenance is acceptable.
Not great for primary homes unless budget is extremely tight. Better options exist for slightly more money.
Paint vs Stain
Paint hides defects, lasts longer between coats. Stain shows texture but needs more frequent application.
Solid stain is the compromise. Color without the film.
