The Pantry Shelving Decision That Changes Everything
You’re standing in your pantry, staring at wire shelving that lets small items fall through, doesn’t adjust to your needs, and looks like it belongs in a garage. You’ve seen the beautiful custom pantry photos online. You’ve also walked through IKEA’s PAX and BOAXEL sections. The question: is custom shelving worth 4-8 times the cost?
Having installed both extensively, I’ll give you the honest comparison.
What $500 at IKEA Gets You
The BOAXEL system—IKEA’s wall-mounted adjustable shelving—runs approximately $400-600 for a typical 48-inch-wide pantry. This includes vertical tracks, adjustable shelves, wire baskets, and mounting hardware. Add SKADIS pegboard for small item organization and you’re still under $550.
Installation takes a focused Saturday. The system requires solid wall mounting—either into studs or with appropriate hollow-wall anchors—but the instructions are clear. Two people make the work easier.
The result is genuinely functional. Shelves adjust in 2-inch increments. Wire baskets slide out for access. The system handles significant weight when properly anchored.
The IKEA Limitations
IKEA’s components come in standard dimensions that may not perfectly fit your space. A 46-inch-wide pantry leaves awkward gaps with 36-inch components. The white metal finish looks institutional rather than built-in. And customization beyond IKEA’s catalog is impossible.
There’s also the perception factor. Guests who see IKEA shelving know it’s IKEA. For some homeowners, this matters; for others, function trumps aesthetics.
What $2,000-4,000 Custom Gets You
Custom pantry shelving from a local cabinetmaker or closet company fits your space exactly. Every inch is utilized. Materials match your kitchen cabinetry—painted poplar, stained oak, or thermofoil. Drawers with soft-close hardware replace awkward reach-in spaces.
Built-in spice racks, pull-out can organizers, appliance garages, and integrated wine storage all become options. The pantry looks like an extension of your kitchen rather than utilitarian storage.
Installation typically takes 1-2 days with minimal disruption. The result photographs beautifully and adds genuine resale value.
Making the Decision
If you’re staying in your home for 5+ years and have the budget, custom pantry shelving returns value through daily use satisfaction and eventual resale appeal. The cost difference—$1,500-3,500—divided over years of daily use amounts to a few dollars per day.
If budget constraints are real, IKEA solutions perform admirably. The BOAXEL system functions well, adjusts as needs change, and can be upgraded later without removing the infrastructure.
One middle path: use IKEA components for the majority of the pantry but add one or two custom pieces—a pull-out drawer unit or a built-in spice rack—where they matter most. This hybrid approach costs perhaps $1,000-1,500 and captures 80% of the custom experience.
The pantry you’ll actually organize and maintain is the one that works for your life. Sometimes that’s custom. Sometimes it’s IKEA. Both beat the wire shelving that’s driving you crazy right now.
