How to Install Gutters

1. Measure Your Roof

2. Mark the Slope

Gutters must slope towards the downspout for proper drainage. The slope should be a quarter inch for every 10 feet of gutter. Mark the high point at one end of the fascia board and the low point at the other end. Use a chalk line to draw a guide between these points.

3. Install Gutter Hangers

Attach gutter hangers along the chalk line. Space them about two feet apart. Ensure they are level. Secure them with screws using a drill. If you’re working with a long gutter, install additional hangers for support.

4. Cut and Assemble the Gutters

Use a hacksaw to cut the gutters to the required length. Attach end caps to the gutters using gutter sealant. Join sections of gutters using connectors, making sure they fit snugly. Seal all joints with gutter sealant to prevent leaks.

5. Attach the Gutters

Position the gutters into the installed hangers. Secure them with screws. Ensure the gutters follow the slope marked with the chalk line. Check that the gutters are level side-to-side.

6. Install Downspouts

Attach downspout outlets to the gutter at the marked low points. Use a drill to secure them with screws. Measure and cut the downspouts to the required length. Attach the downspouts to the outlets and secure them to the wall with brackets. Space the brackets about three feet apart.

7. Ensure Proper Drainage

Check that the downspouts direct water away from the foundation. Extend them if necessary. Consider using splash blocks or extensions to guide water further away.
