“Mineral Spirits – Uses and Safety”

Mineral spirits. Paint thinner. Solvent. Here’s what you need to know.

What It Does

Cleans oil-based paint and stain. Thins finishes for spraying. Removes adhesive residue.

Doesn’t work on latex. Water-based stuff needs water or specific cleaners.

Types

Regular mineral spirits. Standard stuff. Works fine. Smells pretty bad.

Odorless mineral spirits. Same chemically but refined more. Less fumes. Slightly more expensive.

Paint thinner is similar but rougher. Works but mineral spirits is cleaner.

Common Uses

Cleaning brushes after oil-based paint. Swish, wipe, repeat until clean.

Wiping off excess stain. Removes pigment without removing what soaked in.

Prepping surfaces. Removes oils and contaminants before finishing.

Safety

Ventilate. Seriously. Fumes are harmful. Open windows. Use fan. Work outside if possible.

Flammable. Keep away from heat sources. No smoking. Store in metal cabinet.

Avoid skin contact. Dries out skin, can cause irritation. Gloves recommended.

Disposal

Don’t pour down drain. Contaminates water. Illegal in most places.

Let sediment settle. Decant clean solvent for reuse. Dispose of sludge at hazardous waste facility.

Alternatives

Citrus solvents exist. Less toxic, biodegradable. Work slower but safer.

Denatured alcohol for shellac. Different products, different solvents.
